What would Marcel Broodthaers Do?

Museum jan Cunen

" In the video La Pluie (Projet pour un texte), 1969, we can see Marcel Broodthaers writing in the rain; the water causes the ink to be erased, making it impossible, or only possible for a very short time, to form words. This work is presented alongside Lahuis' installation Hydrology, in which water is precisely the material that generates the meaning of words, appearing and disappearing within seconds from black, monolithic objects. The words that emanate from these objects is possibly the shortest summary of the hydrological cycle that one can think of 'FROM OCEANS TO CLOUDS, TO RAIN TO RIVERS'. These words are released into the air, and reintegrated into this cycle once again.

In this exhibition, Broodthaers' work serves as both a starting point and a catalyst for exploring the interconnections between Dutch and Flemish artists from different generations. The result is a classic Broodthaers-esque environment, full of associative combinations and resonant visual rhymes. With work by Marinus Boezem, Stijn ter Braak, Marcel Broodthaers, Pieter Engels, Willem de Haan, Lennart Lahuis, Chant van Lieshout, Hester Oerlemans, Idris Sevenans, and D.D.
